Two for Tea

Roy Spiers and Roland Smyth both joined CareSound Radio as teenagers in the early 90’s, and 35 years on are still contributing to our service. Following the presentation of the King’s Award for Voluntary Service two representatives of CareSound Radio were invited to the Royal Garden Party at Holyrood on Tuesday 1st of July 2025.

Who better to represent us than two of our longest serving members? Roland took a few moments to tell us about how much they enjoyed their day.

“It was a privilege to represent CareSound Radio at the Royal Garden Party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse with fellow volunteer Roy Spiers yesterday. The charity broadcasts a 24/7 service to hospital patients and residents in over 30 care homes across Perthshire, promoting mental and physical health, wellbeing and positive ageing.

We remain absolutely focused on providing a truly local service as other radio stations move in the other direction. For example, our weekly Tuesday Team Talk show, discussing all things St Johnstone, is fast approaching episode 425 – now that’s some dedication to a cause!

And lovely to bump into some familiar faces, not least my uni buddies Louise and Calum Harvie who I hadn’t seen in person since graduation! Thank you to all the staff and musicians at the Palace for making yesterday a wonderful day to remember.”
